| Descripción | Descripción proveniente de YouTube: On June 20 a crowd authorities estimated at 300,000 and organizers at over a million marched in Rio ide Janeiro - latest of a series of protests that have swept across Brazilian cities. The demonstrations began in São Paulo as a protest against bus fare increases but have quickly become the outlet for a series of frustrations and grievances Brazilians are increasingly voicing, from corruption in business and politics, to failing heath and education services.
Both São Paulo and Rio, amongst a number of other Brazilian cities, agreed June 19th to wipe out the bus fare increase. But protests went ahead anyway and in Rio, crowds chanted slogans against President Dilma Rousseff, Rio mayor Eduardo Paes and Rio state governor Sérgio Cabral. Spending on the World Cup was also a target for chanting and banners. The protest in Rio had been peaceful but as the march neared the Town Hall, a confronatation began - there are various versions as to why, but Brazil's Folha de S.Paulo newspaper said protestors began throwing missiles - and police began firing tear gas indiscriminantly into the crowd. It was after this that the scenes of controntation shown here appeared to take place. Later, after the camera was switched off, police used tear gas and stun bombs to clear people from the Cinelândia and Lapa areas of central Rio - Lapa is home to many of Rio's bars and clubs. | |
